Purgatory is the canticle of transition, purification and regeneration that leads from hell to heaven. The main element is therefore water. Dante immerses himself in Lethe (canto XXXI) and drinks from Eunoè (canto XXXIII), the two rivers that arise from the same source but then divide and in so doing forget the past steeped in sin and guilt in order to regenerate. My interpretation sees the hands that collect the regenerating water from the mud of sin.
